cpu review

AMD Ryzen 9 5900XT

Cores/threads: 16C / 32T Socket: AM4 Use case: Gaming, coding
★★★★★ 5 / 5

What I use it for

Mostly gaming, but I also write and compile code on this rig regularly, so I actually get some use out of all 16 cores rather than them sitting idle most of the time.

Gaming performance

Paired with my RTX 5070 at 1440p, the CPU is never the bottleneck. Games run smooth and I've not had a single moment where I've wondered if I need a more powerful CPU.

Coding and compiling

This is where the extra cores actually pay off. Compile times are quick and I can have a build running in the background without it dragging down anything else I'm doing on the machine at the same time.

Everyday use

No complaints day to day. It's quick to boot into, doesn't get in the way when I'm multitasking between a game, a browser with too many tabs, and a code editor, and it's been completely stable since I set it up.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Plenty of cores for gaming and compiling at the same time
  • Never a bottleneck for my GPU
  • Rock solid, no stability issues

Cons

  • AM4 is on its way out, so no upgrade path beyond this
  • Runs warm under sustained multi-core load

Final thoughts

If you're after a CPU that's genuinely good for both gaming and getting real work done, this has done everything I've asked of it.
